Forty-Second Tiny Moment

  1. Oh the power of parental shame. When I was about 12, a friend dressed as a prostitute for our school's halloween parade. Her mother diddn't mind, but mine did! I had no idea what a prostitute was but my mother suddenly forbade me from seeing my friend again and didn't explain why. I wish I could draw as well as you, would love to draw my own tiny moments.

  2. I could point you in the direction of loads of comic artists who can't 'draw' in the traditional sense (me included). Check out the work of Jeffrey Brown (http://jeffreybrowncomics.blogspot.com/) or Liz Prince (http://lizprincepower.com/). And that's no insult to them- they are fantastic artists in their own way, creating really moving and funny stories drawn with their own unique scrawls. Also, Harvey Pekar (American Splendor) can't draw at all, so he writes his stories with stick figures then passes them off to more confident artists!

    In other words... get drawing!

  3. Jeffrey Brown actually IS a really good artist in the "traditional sense", it's just that for his auto-bio work he prefers the immediacy of that style. Read his Wolverine comic if you haven't already!

  4. You're right, and I totally agree. Sorry, I should have said that these artists *don't* draw in the traditional sense rather than *can't*. I mean that they choose a style that isn't necessarily about realism or conforming to mainstream styles, but about immediacy and personal style.
